CANNES, France — The heart of the cinematic world is beating once again on the French Riviera as the 79th Cannes Film Festival officially kicked off today. Running from May 12 to May 23 along the iconic Boulevard de la Croisette, this year’s festival marks a pivotal shift in the industry. With legendary South Korean director Park Chan-wook presiding over the jury, Cannes is positioning itself as the “new epicenter of global art,” signaling a notable departure from traditional Hollywood dominance.
There is a palpable “Hollywood void” at Cannes this year. As major U.S. studios keep their distance, the spotlight has shifted entirely to auteur-driven films and the meteoric rise of Eastern cinema. In a historic first, the jury is led by the “Father of Oldboy,” Park Chan-wook. He is joined by a star-studded panel of jurors, including Hollywood icon Demi Moore, veteran actor Stellan Skarsgård, and Academy Award-winning director Chloé Zhao.
Türkiye has emerged as one of the most talked-about participants at this year’s festival. Through the high-profile “Türkiye Invites You” reception, the country is set to host the world’s elite filmmakers while showcasing its own deep roster of talent on the red carpet.
Leading the Turkish delegation are stars such as Engin Akyürek, Dilan Çiçek Deniz, Caner Cindoruk, and Özgü Namal. Additionally, Ozan Akbaba and Sinem Ünsal, stars of the hit series Uzak Şehir (The Distant City), are expected to draw massive media attention at a major gala on May 16. To bolster the country’s industry presence, the Turkish General Directorate of Cinema will promote Türkiye’s world-class filming locations to international producers from May 15-17.
While the films are the main attraction, Artificial Intelligence is the dominant conversation of Cannes 2026. Festival Director Thierry Frémaux has voiced sharp criticism regarding the rapid digital shift in cinema. However, in a paradoxical move, the festival has introduced a new “Immersive Competition,” integrating Virtual Reality (VR) experiences into the main category for the first time. Cannes appears to be walking a tightrope—wary of AI’s ethical implications while simultaneously embracing its cutting-edge potential.
This year’s official festival poster pays homage to the 35th anniversary of the classic Thelma & Louise. However, the most polarizing project of the festival is Steven Soderbergh’s documentary on John Lennon, which utilizes AI to recreate the late icon. The film has ignited a firestorm of ethical debate across the industry, even before its first screening.
